After studying composition with Eric Gross at the University of Sydney as part of his bachelor of music degree, Mr Forsyth studied tenor and bass trombone with Arthur Hubbard at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He was New South Wales Bass Trombone Champion from 1987 to 1994 and in 1996, as well as National Champion in 1992, 1993 and 1996.

Currently, Mr Forsyth plays tuba as a member of the Parramatta City Brass Band. From 1985 to 2006, he was bass trombonist with the St Mary’s Band Club Brass Band. He performed frequently with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra from 1989 to 1998.

Mr Forsyth’s compositions have been performed, broadcast and recorded both in Australia and overseas. Several of these works have been selected as test pieces for New South Wales and national championships. His composition Alea Iacta Est was chosen as the A Grade test piece for the 2007 NSW State Band Championships and for the Division d’Honneur of the 2009 French National Band Championships, for which he served as a member of the jury. He was also a jury member for the 39th European Brass Band Championships held in Lille, France in 2016.

As a teacher, Mr Forsyth has worked in government and private schools. He was appointed as an AMEB examiner in 1997 and wrote the AMEB publication Brass Sight Reading. Mr Forsyth is regularly called upon to adjudicate at eisteddfods and at state and metropolitan band competitions.
