AMEB (NSW) schedules exams at several venues. The exam venue is printed on the candidate’s Notice of Examination.

Students should check the address of their exam venue and plan their travel before the day of their exam. Is parking available? Are there any expected public transport delays listed on the Transport NSW website?

Requesting a venue

AMEB (NSW) may schedule exams:

  • at any approved venue for practical and written exams
  • on any day (Monday to Saturday)

Enrollers may request a particular venue for a weekday or Saturday exam. AMEB (NSW) tries to accommodate these requests but it is not always possible due to examiner and venue availability.

What is an external venue?

An approved external venue is a private venue suitable to host AMEB exams and would include:

  • NESA-accredited schools
  • Privately owned music schools
  • Spacious residential private music studios

Each venue must be able to assure a minimum of four hours (six hours on a Saturday) of continual examining for the visiting AMEB instrument specialist examiner.
For venues looking to apply for approval to host AMEB Music or Speech and Drama exams, please read the External Venues Policy for more details about

  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Minimum size requirements

Currently, there are also COVID-19 health and safety considerations which must be adhered to.

What you need to do to have exams held at an external venue

External venue examinations are most likely to be scheduled on a weekday. The postcode of the enroller will be used to determine the examination period if a external venue is being used.

Enrollers can request candidates be examined at a pre-arranged non-AMEB (NSW) venue at the time of enrolment by entering the venue number under 'Preferred Venue'. Enrollers must contact the venue owner to obtain the venue number. AMEB (NSW) does not give out private venue numbers.

If the studio belongs to another teacher, or is a school venue you must obtain

  • permission and
  • the venue code

from the person or institution involved before enrolling candidates. Your contact details may also be given to the venue owner.

The following list of venues are NOT external venues, and enrollers must not make contact with them:

  • AMEB Clarence Street studios,
  • Sydney Conservatorium,
  • Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, and
  • JMC Academy.

Any hire costs and other associated expenses for the studio or venue must be met by the visiting teacher.

AMEB (NSW) will only assign an examiner to a particular venue if a minimum of four hours (or six hours on a Saturday) of examining time per instrumental group is available and scheduled.

If you would like your studio to be considered as an AMEB external venue, please read the information in the External Venues policy.

AMEB (NSW) reserves the right to alter the location of the examination to facilitate the provision of an examiner or if the venue is not available or suitable.
