Melanie McLoughlin is a trumpet performer and music teacher. After receiving the Queen’s Trust Award for Young Australians in 1999, she studied performance at the Royal College of Music in London. In 2002, she was awarded the prestigious Junior Fellowship. Ms McLoughlin directed the trumpet ensemble Blast RCM, which won the UK Brass Ensemble competition in 2001. She collaborated with the Australian High Commission to present a series of concerts of Australian music performed by Australian musicians across the United Kingdom.

Ms McLoughlin was principal trumpet of Southbank Sinfonia from 2002 to 2004 and freelanced with the English National Opera, the Royal Philharmonic and the Philharmonia. She also performed with the London Soloist Orchestra and at many festivals across Europe. Ms McLoughlin was awarded the Philharmonia Orchestral Martin Award, the Walls Trust Award, the Royal Overseas League Prize and an Australian Music Foundation Award. She performed at Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral at memorial services for the Bali bombing victims that were televised worldwide.

After living in London for eight years, McLoughlin returned to Australia in 2007. Since then, she has performed with ensembles including the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, the Sydney Philharmonia, Ensemble Offspring, Australian Baroque Brass, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Ms McLoughlin has performed with the Black Arm Band, the Whitlams and Helmut Lotti on his Australian tour. She performs at Opera in the Vineyards and at Babies Proms each year and recently toured Australia with West Side Story.

Ms McLoughlin has performed on many film and television recordings and also records as a soloist. She is currently publishing a series of educational brass books.

A qualified secondary school music teacher, McLoughlin regularly adjudicates eisteddfods and sits on audition panels for selective schools.
