Annabella Redman graduated from the Canberra School of Music with distinction in performance. During her studies, she appeared in many operatic productions and sang with several state symphony orchestras. She won the Robert Stolz/Apex Australia Award for study at the Vienna Conservatorium of Music and was also awarded an Australia Council for the Arts grant, as well as scholarships from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Trust, the Rotary Foundation, the German government and the Vienna Conservatorium.

In Vienna, Dr Redman expanded her operatic repertoire and performed in roles such as Blondchen (Abduction from the Seraglio), Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro), Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). She toured Europe, Asia, the United States and the United Arab Emirates singing opera, operetta and musical theatre. Dr Redman also sang in all of Vienna’s major concert houses and was chosen by the city to open the Mozart Bicentenary celebrations in Tokyo.

While in Vienna, Dr Redman intensified her interest in teaching. She was a voice lecturer at that city’s School of Performing Arts, a tertiary training institute specialising in musical theatre. Dr Redman also gave masterclasses at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and led the Voice department at the Adriatic Summer Festival in Bonefro, Italy.

After returning to Australia in 2002, Dr Redman toured with Oz Opera in the role of Laura in Midnight. She taught at the University of Newcastle up to the postgraduate level, encompassing a range of singing styles. In 2011, Dr Redman completed her doctorate, which compared the technical development of vocal styles used in musical theatre. She has since taught musical theatre performance and technique at NSW TAFE.

Dr Redman adjudicates regularly at eisteddfods and runs a private studio.
