Michael Bell studied at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where his teachers were Baden McCarron and Arthur Hubbard. He later studied with Michael Hext, Principal Trombone of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mr Bell has been a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Sydney Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra. From 1991 to 1998, he was a regular member of the Hunter Symphony Orchestra. Since 1992, Mr Bell has been the musical director of the award-winning University of Newcastle Concert Band and Toronto Brass.

As an adjudicator, Mr Bell has worked with both the Band Association of NSW and the National Band Council. He was a conductor for the Opera Hunter productions of The Merry Widow, Die Fledermaus and West Side Story.

Mr Bell has taught brass for more than 20 years. He currently teaches at the University of Newcastle and in various schools in the region. In addition, Mr Bell is brass specialist for the Upper Hunter Conservatorium.
