Since 1963, Jennifer Barnes has been a performer in theatre, on television, in opera, in recital, in oratorio and on recordings.

The director of vocal workshops and masterclasses, Dr Barnes has maintained a teaching studio since 1980 and has been a tertiary voice tutor since 1988. For four years, she conducted the University of Newcastle Choir. Dr Barnes is also a published researcher. Her doctoral thesis, which focused on the subjective audibility of operatic sopranos over an orchestra, incorporated the study of vocal anatomy and acoustic properties.

Dr Barnes is an external examiner for voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and Avondale College, as well as for AMEB.
