James Nightingale is a Sydney-based saxophonist with extensive experience as a performer and teacher. He is the alto saxophonist with Australia’s premier saxophone quartet, Continuum Sax. Since 1993, he has performed regularly as a casual saxophonist with Sydney orchestras. Dr Nightingale performed as soloist with the Sydney Symphony for ABC Television’s Quest ’95 program. He was also a finalist in that competition as a member of the Senarius Saxophone Quartet.

Dr Nightingale’s solo CD, Drive, showcases Australian music for saxophone. His playing is featured in CDs of music by Andrew Ford, including Harbour. Dr Nightingale can also be heard on the Sydney Symphony’s recordings of Ravel’s Bolero and Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances. Barry Cockcroft, Paul Stanhope, Brian Howard and Stuart Greenbaum have all dedicated works to him.

Dr Nightingale has more than 20 years of experience as a saxophone teacher, including 14 years as a member of the casual staff at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He was the consultant editor for the AMEB Saxophone Series 2 grade books.
