Janet Piper studied violin and piano at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide under the guidance of Lloyd Davies, Alison Holder, James Whitehead and Beryl Kimber. After completing her degree, she began a scholarship with the ABC’s National Training Orchestra in Sydney and studied violin with Carl Pini at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Mrs Piper was a permanent member of the violin section in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 1970 to 1979. As a freelance player, she has performed with all the major ensembles in Sydney – including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and the Sydney International Orchestra under the late Tommy Tyco – as well as with a variety of light music presentations.

For many years, Mrs Piper ran a private studio. She has also taught at Ascham School, Loreto Kirribilli and The King’s School, where she became Head of Strings. She was a regular tutor for the Sydney Youth Orchestra in its formative years and is now a frequent adjudicator at eisteddfods.
