Philippa Paige – Strings Adviser

Philippa Paige

Philippa Paige was a student of Robert Pikler at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and of Bela Katona and Eli Goren in London. She was also a participant in masterclasses with Igor Ozim, Sandor Vegh, Kato Havas, Edouard Melkus, Gerald Fishbach and Nannie Jamieson. She is a graduate in Music Performance from the University of Sydney and was awarded a Licentiate in Teaching by the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Philippa has extensive experience as a player having worked as a free-lance violinist in London and as a member of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra in Spain. She has been a permanent member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 1986.

A longstanding interest in teaching has led to many teaching positions in England, Spain and Australia. Philippa has been a member of the String Staff at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 1985 and is the current Strings Adviser to the AMEB in NSW. She gives frequent masterclasses, lectures and workshops as part of her involvement with the SSO’s extensive Education Program as well as for the Conservatorium’s Access Centre, the AMEB and the Australian Strings Association. Philippa has adjudicated at a number of eisteddfodau in Sydney and regional areas.

Australian repertoire is of particular interest to Philippa who has done many years of research in this field. She has devised a graded list of Australian violin music for the Australian Music Centre and has edited a number of pieces. She received the 1999 Australian Music Centre Education Award for her recent publication Australian Violin Music, Concert Pieces.
