Peter Walmsley – Brass Adviser

Peter Walmsley

Peter Walmsley commenced his musical career in Broken Hill in the 1950s. He played tenor horn, cornet and trumpet, winning over 40 first prizes in State and National competitions. He also studied piano to Diploma level at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide.

Playing trumpet, Peter won the South Australian instrumental section of the ABC Concerto Competition in 1964. In 1967, he was appointed to the trumpet section of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, a position he still holds. As well as orchestral work, he has performed with many brass ensembles, and has worked as a soloist in a wide variety of contexts.

Teaching brass has occupied much of the last forty years, and he has been a member of the staff at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Sydney University, the Nepean Advanced College of Education and the University of NSW. Peter has also adjudicated at major competitions and eisteddfods throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Peter has been involved with bands all his life, and is currently Director of Bands at Barker College, where there are five concert bands, a brass ensemble and three stage bands. He has been made a life member of the Band Association of NSW and has received an award from Boosey and Hawkes for his dedication to the band movement in Australia.

His daughter Catherine is also a trumpet player and an examiner for the AMEB, and his son Matthew plays tuba and euphonium.
