AMEB Newsletter – November 2017

From Professor Anna Reid
State Chairperson AMEB (NSW)

Mitzi Garner

For 100 years, the AMEB (NSW) and the national umbrella organisation has been central to Australia's music education history. As the Sydney Conservatorium of Music recently celebrated their Centenary, I am pleased the AMEB can join the ranks of musical Centenarians!

Our predecessor, the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, joined with other tertiary music schools around Australia in 1918, creating a national organisation for public examinations in music. There were 848 enrolments in the first year of AMEB examinations, and this has now grown 100 years later to well over 36,000 enrolments per year – a formidable task, not just in logistical management but the promotion of music education. The examination experience is far different to what it was 100 years ago, where examiners would often travel by horse and cart to rural homesteads and convents to conduct examinations.

AMEB (NSW) continues to provide music and speech and drama students with examinations conducted by highly skilled specialist examiners, in all instruments and subjects, around the state. Many of our examiners are also renowned performers, composers and educators who are active in the arts community in Australia and internationally. The Diploma presentation ceremonies are always a great event with eminent guest speakers including governors, composers, prominent musicians, academics and politicians.

Learning music helps us to develop an awareness of musical aesthetics that connects to people of other times and cultures. It also impacts on our own identity as we grapple with musical ideas and techniques. I am in admiration of teachers, parents and examiners who work so hard to make music possible, and I encourage students to pursue this amazing art with enthusiasm for the rest of their lives.

I would like to express my thanks to all parents, students, teachers, examiners and the staff of AMEB (NSW) for completing an amazing year of artistic endeavours and I extend my hearty congratulations on reaching such a significant milestone.

Happy 100th birthday!

Professor Anna Reid

The AMEB (NSW) team have been working hard on new advancements to the AMEB Connect NSW portal to streamline your AMEB requirements.

From  2018, teachers, parents and self-enrollers will now be able to perform all of the following functions once you login to AMEB Connect NSW:

Seven year old twins Jasper and Jeremy Zhou looked sharp in their matching tuxedos when they came to the Clarence Street studios for their Preliminary piano examinations. They both learn piano and violin, as well as playing soccer and enjoying the sun and surf at Nippers.

The Lee children certainly keep their parents busy with their many musical endeavours. They came to the Clarence Street studios for their piano examinations recently: Ean Huey (9) had a Grade 1 Piano examination, while her two brothers Ean Eou (11) and Ean Tzuan (12) sat for Grade 2 and Grade 3 Piano respectively. Ean Tzuan and Ean Eou have also recently completed Flute and Trumpet examinations, while Ean Huey is now preparing for her Percussion examination later this year.

Nine year old Katy Perry fan, Georgina Rouse, sat for her Grade 4 Singing for Leisure examination this month.

Georgina also plays flute and violin, and outside of music, she enjoys gymnastics, ballet and athletics

This new examination format was launched in 2017 for Violin, Flute, Trumpet and Drama & Communication as a trial, offering an opportunity for many candidates who may not have had time to prepare for the traditional examination to still attend an examination and receive valuable feedback on their progress. The trial will continue for these four subjects in 2018.
