Knowing the Score:
how to take the stress out of your AMEB exam
Knowing
the Score provides candidates and parents with information about the AMEB
system of examinations, how grades are awarded, the best ways to prepare
for the examination and how to enjoy the experience. There are also sections
on examiners, practical and written examinations in both Music and Speech
and Drama, as well as the background and operations of the AMEB. The publication
demystifies the examination process and gives candidates an idea of what
to expect before they actually present for the examination. Knowing the
Score is a useful tool for all candidates and their parents and it is
available from the AMEB (NSW) office.

- Each year the AMEB administers more than 100,000 examinations throughout Australia, with over 40,000 in metropolitan and country New South Wales.
- AMEB syllabuses focus on technical proficiency, stylistic understanding, musicianship and performance. They are comprehensive and allow for a degree of flexibility in the choice of pieces selected from a wide range for each grade.
- The AMEB (NSW) employs only highly professional teachers and performers as examiners with examinations conducted by specialists in each instrument.

- Manuals of Syllabuses are issued annually and are available for sale from AMEB offices and music stores. The Manuals provide detailed information about syllabuses and examinations conducted throughout New South Wales. In addition to the music manual, separate manuals are available for Speech syllabuses and some instruments.
- Each year a Teachers’ Handbook is published by the AMEB (NSW) and this is available free of charge to teachers. The Handbook sets out the terms and conditions for enrolment in AMEB (NSW) examinations, as well as examination dates, fees and policies.
- A presentation ceremony is held every year to celebrate the achievements of successful diploma candidates in New South Wales. AMEB diploma holders are entitled to wear special academic dress.
