George Torbay

Hailed by The Sydney Morning Herald as ‘one of Australia's leading musical lights,’ George Torbay completed studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts USA, the University of Sydney and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

A distinguished conductor, music educator, singing teacher, adjudicator, performer and director, George has served as Chief Conductor Choral Music for the NSW Department of Education, Lecturer in Singing at Federation University, advisor to Hal Leonard Australia and as the Director of Music for the television series Battle of the Choirs.

George's career began as a singer and an actor. While in the United States, he performed roles in West Side Story, Pinafore, 42nd Street, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Me and My Girl. His directing credits include the musical Chess with Normie Rowe, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, The Secret Garden, Urinetown, Titanic, Blood Brothers and The Hatpin. His opera directing credits include The Marriage of Figaro, La Bohéme and La Traviata.

He is a published arranger with Warner Brothers, Morton Music and Hal Leonard Australia. For Hal Leonard he has published eight books entitled CHORALTIME.

AMEB has worked closely with George, appointing him as Syllabus Consultant to develop the new Musical Theatre Syllabus, and more recently he has been appointed as AMEB (NSW) Musical Theatre Advisor.
