Gillian Smith

BMus (Bassoon) CSCM (Clarinet)

Gillian attended high school and pursued her tertiary studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she studied bassoon with Gordon Skinner and Douglas Eyre, clarinet with Neville Thomas and Gabor Reeves, and piano with Sarah Grunstein and Stephanie McCallum.

On the completion of her Bachelor of Music, Gillian received a Big Brother Scholarship, which enabled her to continue private study in London with several leading bassoonists.

Gillian has performed with a number of orchestras including the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra, Hunter Orchestra, and for the musical The Secret Garden where she performed on bassoon, clarinet and bass clarinet. She has also performed with a number of chamber ensembles including Arcadia Ensemble and The Chambermaids. Gillian has been involved in several film recordings, and performed on the album Widening Circles by Spike Mason. She also appeared in the documentary ‘Outback Opera’ on the ABC.

Gillian has been teaching for 20 years for a variety of institutions including New South Wales University, The Scots College, and Newtown High School of the Performing Arts. She was the woodwind section leader for World Youth Day where she tutored and performed with a number of young students. She has also tutored at the NSW State and Border Music Camps. Gillian is currently teaching at St George Christian School whilst maintaining a busy private studio.
