Gian-Franco has been teaching at the University of Newcastle since 1996 and has been a full-time piano lecturer there since 2004. His responsibilities include teaching piano to tertiary piano students, teaching piano techniques classes (functional keyboard skills) as well as coaching small ensembles, and studio teaching classes (pedagogy).

Born in South America to a musical family, Gian-Franco studied in the United States with many noted pianists, including Bèla Siki and Theodore Lettvin. He has also participated in masterclasses with Leon Fleischer and Abbey Simon. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, a Masters degree in Piano Performance from the University of Massachusetts and a PhD from the University of Newcastle (Australia).

Gian-Franco has appeared as recitalist and in ensemble in the United States, Europe and Australia. He has broadcast live for PBS public radio in the United States as well as the ABC in Australia. His recordings include the world premiere of Yusef Lateef's Piano Sonata on Atlantic Records and the complete Schubert Sonatinas with Ruggiero Ricci (violin) on the One-Eleven label.
