Examiner Number: 1198

Luke O’Neill is a guitarist, composer and music teacher. He holds a Master of Creative Arts (Research), in music composition, from the University of Wollongong and completed his Bachelor of Performing Arts at Southern Cross University, in Lismore, where he studied composition with Dr Michael Hannan.

He has played extensively throughout Australia and is a well-known soloist and accompanist at acoustic music festivals. Luke has performed folk music with ARIA Award winner Kavisha Mazzella, played contemporary jazz in his band L.O.N.G., appeared with saxophonist Julien Wilson and is a casual member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Since 1994 Luke has released four CDs of original music as well as producing soundtracks for film and multimedia productions. His music, described as “beautiful and evocative” by Michael Shirrefs (ABC Radio National) has been influenced by his studies into Celtic and Brazilian music, and more recently by his research into the number based concepts of Australian percussionist Greg Sheehan.

Luke’s private teaching practice has been operating for over 20 years. During this time he has been fortunate to teach music in Aboriginal communities, at tertiary colleges, and at primary and secondary schools. Currently Luke runs the guitar program at Frensham College, Mittagong.
