Phillip Moran

BMUS(with Merit), ASCM

Philip Moran is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He majored in guitar performance with Gregory Pikler and obtained B Mus with merit and was named Student of the Year. Further guitar studies were pursued in England and Spain with Timothy Walker, Gordon Crosskey and Carlos Bonnell.

Philip undertook master classes with John Williams at the Victorian College of the Arts and won first prize in the inaugural Australian Guitar Competition (1983). Highlights of his performance career include a solo recital at the Sydney Opera House, guest concerto appearances with various orchestras including the Sydney Youth Orchestra under maestro Tommy Tycho and a sell-out solo recital for the Hunters Hill Music Club with guest artist Jane Rutter. He has also worked with violinist Martin Lass and tenor Ronald Stevens, and with the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, the Bennelong Players and as a Church Music Director.

Philip has released two solo CDs (Spanish Inspiration in 2003 and Hasta Mañana in 2009). The albums have been well received and regularly programmed on ABC Classic FM. Phil’s rendition of La Paloma was featured on Macca’s Australia all Over, a national ABC radio program. It was voted in the Top Ten favourite pieces of 2010.

Phil has a guitar studio in north-west Sydney and also lectures in Aural, Harmony and Music History at the Wesley Institute. Phil plays electric guitar professionally for a number of show bands.
