Amanda Miller

MMus, BMus, LMus, AMus

Examiner Number: 1097

Amanda holds a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music (performance), graduating from both with distinction in performance. As a student she studied with the prominent Australian teachers Margaret Hair, Lyall Duke and Elizabeth Powell as well as periodically with Professor Lev Vlasenko then Chair of Moscow Conservatorium.

As a performer, Amanda has given solo recitals for the Australian Institute of Music, Australian Keyboard Society, the Travis Foundation and Pan Pacific Music Camps. Amanda has worked with choirs and orchestras on numerous occasions and has appeared as a soloist in Britten’s Mass for St Nicholas, Orgff’s Carmina Burana and Carmina Cartulli, Orff’s Veni Creator Spiritus and as soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solonnelle and Finzi’s Ecologue. Following her particular interest in the genre of duo piano repertoire, she has performed many works including the complete Le Sacre du Printemps at Sydney Conservatorium. In this area too, Amanda completed her Master’s Thesis on the emergence of the piano duo in Sydney, investigating the public collaboration of Frank Hutchens and Lindley Evans, a partnership that spanned 41 years. This study, specifically focused on their piano concertising, appears to be the first of its kind in Australia.

She is currently Chamber Organist for the Sydneian Bach Choir, who are performing all extant Bach Cantatas over a number of years.

Amanda has lectured in performance studies at the Australian Institute of Music as well as tutoring in their Rising Stars program in addition to serving as piano teacher, chamber music tutor and examiner at Sydney Conservatorium in their program for young, aspiring musicians. She currently holds the position of Music Master (Accompanist) at Sydney Grammar School and has affiliations with all three campuses.

Additionally, Amanda runs a busy and successful private studio. Her HSC Music candidates consistently fall within the top band of marks in their music exams and, in 2007, one of her students gained first place in 2 Unit Music and in Music Extension in the State.
