Examiner Number: 329

Simone Koolhaas completed her Masters degree in cello performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Susan Blake in 1995. As part of this course, she wrote a thesis on string pedagogy, comparing traditional teaching methods with the Suzuki method. She has developed an interest in the teaching of cello to young children and works part-time at Ascham School, Lane Cove Public School, Abbotsleigh Junior School and the Australian Institute of Music.

Simone began her cello studies at the age of eight with Dorothy Sumner. After winning the double concerto section of the Kur-ring-gai Schools Concerto competition she began lessons with Georg Pedersen, who was her teacher until she completed her BMus in 1992. In 1990 she was awarded a Big Brother scholarship which allowed three months of study in London, where she had lessons with William Pleeth, David Strange and Anna Shutleworth.

At the end of 1993 she travelled to the United States to observe two weeks of lessons by Irene Sharp at the San Francisco Conservatory. In 1994 she participated in workshops and masterclasses presented by Phyllis Young. Simone has participated in various orchestras and chamber music combinations. With the Cove Chamber Orchestra she toured Tonga and the Solomon Islands. She has also been a member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra and the Melbourne Philharmonic.
