Dorit Herskovits

Dorit’s music studies began in Sydney, including with the National Training Orchestra, and continued in Switzerland (early music at the Schola Cantorum in Basel) and Germany (modern double bass in Cologne and Berlin).

Dorit has served as Principal Double Bass and front-desk player with the Queensland Theatre Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and on USA and Italian tours with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. For eight years Dorit worked with the Australian Chamber Orchestra as Assistant Principal Bassist and as Principal, including on European and USA tours.

Dorit played over many years in the Sydney, Adelaide and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, the Auckland Philharmonia, the Bangkok Symphony, for Opera Australia’s OzOpera national tours 2002–2007 and in Sydney with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra 2007–2011.

Dorit continues to play annually in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, as well as freelance and chamber music In Sydney, interstate and overseas.

A long association with performing contemporary music began with Sydney’s Seymour Ensemble and included Chamber Made Opera and Libra Ensemble. Dorit regularly performs chamber music with the Brisbane-based Ensemble I.

In non-classical styles Dorit has served as Principal player for Pavarotti, Streisand, Stevie Wonder, Sarah Brightman, The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), Michael Crawford and for musicals such as Crazy For You, Hello Dolly, Phantom of the Opera and South Pacific.

After many years teaching at leading private schools, Dorit now teaches double bass at the Australian Institute of Music, tutors chamber ensembles and teaches at her private studio. She has tutored at music camps  and at Melbourne University.

In addition to her music, Dorit also teaches English and assesses new students for Navitas, the government migrant English program.

Dorit graduated with a Master of Arts, majoring in Applied Linguistics in 2004 and became an AMEB Strings Examiner in 2011.
