Francis Louran

Francis has been an examiner of piano candidates since 1990 and was recently appointed an examiner in brass.

Francis Louran graduated with Merit and the first prize for the best recital at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music after which he was appointed an Artist-in-Residence at the Riverina College of Advanced Education under a Musica Viva and Australia Council for the Arts scheme.

While at Sydney University and the Sydney Conservatorium, Francis studied English as well as the French horn and played in the Sydney Youth Orchestra for several years as well as augmenting the horn section in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in larger-scale works.

Following further studies in Paris and teaching undergraduates at the Riverina College of Advanced Education, Francis directed a music school in Sydney as an officer of the NSW Division of Cultural Activities within the Premier’s Department of Cultural Activities and was responsible for the curriculum and management of a community-based school catering for the musical and pastoral needs of over a hundred students in the Mount Druitt area of Sydney.

Francis joined the staff of Sydney Grammar School for 14 years as a school master where he taught secondary school English, class Music and conducted several of the school’s bands, orchestras and choirs.

He pursued his work experience at Eton College and was fortunate to have the opportunity to study the music of Bach at Jesus College Oxford as part of his professional development while working at Sydney Grammar School.

Francis held the post of Director of Music at Cranbrook School in Sydney’s Bellevue Hill for 11 years where he managed the K–12 curriculum, conducted the school’s bands and orchestras and several musicals in conjunction with Ascham School.

In 2011 Francis retired from classroom education and now devotes his time to his teaching studio, tutoring HSC English and Music students, writing pieces on the raising of successful children in the high school environment, accompanying young performers in their HSC recitals, and examining for the AMEB.
