Michael Bell

Michael Bell studied for the DSCM and Bachelor of Music Education at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. In 1985 he began studying at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music for the Bachelor of Music. His teachers were Baden McCarron and Arthur Hubbard.

Michael has been a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra, Sydney Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra. From 1991 to 1998 Michael was a regular member of the Hunter Symphony Orchestra. In 1989 Michael studied with Michael Hext, principal trombone of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since 1992 Michael has been involved as the musical director of the University of Newcastle Concert Band and Toronto Brass. Both bands have had many successes in competitions at state and national levels. He currently directs the University of Newcastle Concert Band.

As an adjudicator Michael has worked in conjunction with both the NSW Band Association and the National Band Council at various solo events. He has also worked professionally as a conductor for Opera Hunter in their productions of The Merry Widow, Die Fledermaus and West Side Story.

Michael has taught brass for over twenty years and presently works in a teaching capacity at the University of Newcastle and as a peripatetic teacher and conductor in various schools in the region. Additionally he works as Brass specialist for the Upper Hunter Conservatorium.
